Playing with Pythagoras (7-9) formerly titled It’s All Right: Pythagoras (7-9)

October 2 - October 20

| Free

This 3-week module uncovers the mysteries of Pythagoras and the famous theorem named for him. We will investigate how the Pythagorean Theorem provides a vital foundation in 8th grade that progresses into high school geometry. After briefly exploring the history of Pythagoras and his discoveries, we will examine different proofs of the theorem and its converse and discover how right triangles help us understand irrational numbers and distance. Specific goals and activities include the following:

  • Use the Pythagorean Theorem to identify the difference between an acute, right, or obtuse triangle.
  • Examine the rationale behind different proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem (there are hundreds!) for all right triangles.
  • Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to real-world and mathematical contexts involving rational numbers and distance.
